Some people will tell you all you need to go running is a good pair of running shoes. That is partially true but in order to get the most benefit out of your running experience, there are some items you may want to get. The following are the important running gear and accessories that you will want to get if you are serious about running and want to enjoy the experience as much as possible.

1. Running shorts

You will find many different types of running shorts but two types are generally thought of as the best. The first is compression tights, which look like biking shorts. These running shorts fit tightly on your body even when you are in motion, compressing your muscles. That means it won’t chafe your skin. The other type of running shorts is the full split shorts. Full split shorts have slits on both sides of the leg so your legs can move easily and without interference. These types of running shorts are usually not very long so runners can be comfortable and free when moving about.

2. Running shirts

No longer are cotton running shirts the rage. Today, shirts made from polyester that wick away moisture are preferred. These running shirts take your sweat and absorb it so you don’t get chilled. If you are running in cooler temperatures, you will want running shirts with long sleeves but in warmer temperatures you should wear thin, short sleeved shirts. A sports bra is a necessity for women who run.

3. Running socks

Good running socks will stop you from getting blisters. You can find running socks meant to absorb moisture so your feet are dry and in good shape after a long run.

4. Reflective vest

Wearing a reflective vest when you run, especially in the evening, is going to help you be seen by vehicles on the road where you are running. Wearing this type of running gear means you are less likely to be injured while running on busy roads. There are also reflective stickers, reflective jackets, and LED armbands you can wear.

Garmin Forerunner 405CX GPS Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor 5. Heart rate monitor

If you want to monitor your heart rate when you work out and see how you are improving over time with regard to heart health, a heart rate monitor is a necessity. This type of running gear has a chest strap and a wrist strap you wear that tells you about your heart rate and the calories you are burning. A heart rate monitor will let you know if the intensity of your workout is right or needs adjusting.

6. Running watch

This type of running gear helps you track data like how far you run, how long you run, and your running pace. Many of the running watches also contain a heart rate monitor and some even have GPS built in to record where you run and where you are at any time. You can download the information from the watch to your computer with some more expensive models.

7. Running belt

This is an important piece of running gear especially if you go for very long runs. It allows you to carry your phone, keys, snacks, camera, and more. A running belt is lightweight and will stay in place without moving while you run.
