There is a plethora of exercise programs available today. So why are there so many overweight and obese people? It makes you also wonder if any of these exercise programs actually work. There's no straight answer, however, to the question since you're going to find people who swear by the methods they use while you're also going to find people who'll say those methods are nothing but hype.
Majority of people decide to exercise because they want to either get healthy and fit or they want control their weight. But then, even if you find the best exercise program there is, it isn't going to help you achieve your goal unless you do it and stick to it.
So where and how do you get started on an effective exercise program, one that you will be able to commit yourself to doing in the long run? After all, you'll need to keep exercising if you want to maintain a healthy body or weight. Exercise isn't something you decide to do a few times and then you're done. You'll only get the benefits of exercising as long as you're exercising.
You'll hear a lot of experts say that you should simply pick an exercise program you like and stick to it. However, if you're new to this whole exercising thing, how can you tell what you like in terms of exercise? You may end up buying a lot of exercise programs and equipment and you still won't find out the right one for you. Or you might find the whole thing so overwhelming you might just decide you're not going to bother with exercising at all!
When you're just starting out, it's important that you form a positive view of exercising, not a negative one. This way, you increase your chances of being able to stick to an exercise regimen when you decide to follow one.
Get Comfortable with Moving
Before you become comfortable doing an exercise program, you need to make sure you're comfortable with moving. Before you start buying workout videos and exercise machines, start by moving your body. And you probably already have the best equipment to help you with the job: a music player — stereo, mp3, CD player, anything that plays music. Play some music and move your body.
Don't worry if you're the most uncoordinated person you know. Choreography can be learned later on. You simply need to concentrate right now on moving your body. Play music that has a good beat, one that inspires you to move. When you're enjoying the music and moving your body, you're teaching yourself to form a positive attachment to moving. You'll feel endorphins kick in and you'll feel good. You're actually exercising!
Guidelines for Exercising
When you decide to start an exercise program, be sure you know the guidelines and are able to follow them. Doing so will help prevent injury during exercise. You've probably heard the saying, "No pain, no gain," but you don't really need to subject your body to pain when you’re exercising in order to see results. You simply need to be moving first.
Pay careful attention to your body as it moves. If you want to lose weight and tone your body quickly, make sure you work out the largest muscle groups first. This means focusing on your core muscles: the muscles on your back and abdomen. Keep those muscles straight and keep them tight. When you've got a toned core, you'll notice your posture is better and any minor back pains you used to experience are going to be gone.
The muscles on your legs are also large muscle groups. The muscles on your legs boost your movement so you want to develop them and make them stronger. The large muscles are responsible for jump starting your metabolism and making your body burn fat faster. In turn, you'll be able to lose weight at a much faster rate. Concentrate on your leg muscles while you're moving. You can bend, lift, kick, or tap your legs from side to side. Feel how your quads (the muscles on the front of your legs) respond when you move. If it helps, visualize how you want them to look later on. When they're used to the movements, you'll find it easier to do reps and sets at different intensities when you do get on an exercise program.
Music Has a Lot to Do with It
Remember that music is a huge motivator for many people to get them moving. However, it may be that the music used in some exercise DVDs isn't really music that inspires you to move. If that happens, you may lose the motivation to exercise and consciously or unconsciously, you'll end up using it as an excuse for you to quit.
The point is this: keep a close watch on your mind too. Know what music inspires you and makes you want to move your body. Once you find that music, find similar music and use those when you're exercising. Maybe you like country music. Perhaps you're into Latin tunes. Whatever it is, find your kind of music and move to its beat.
Pretty soon, all that moving to the kind of music you like is going to help you lose weight. And that may just be the thing you need to feel confident enough to get a gym membership for instance, or to go out and play tennis with your friend. With your confidence gradually building and the weight slowly coming away, you'll find yourself motivated to change and customize your exercise routine.
Remember that fat is less dense than muscle, so if you like stepping on the scale every week, curb the impulse. Why? The first few weeks of working out, you will actually gain weight. It's because you're building your large muscle groups. So while you may feel a lot leaner, you may be heavier, and that may make you feel like all the exercising you're doing isn't working.
If you're not able to see any visible changes to your body, listen to what your family, friends, or colleagues tell you. If they mention that you look like you've lost weight (even if you know you're heavier), it may be because they're seeing a leaner you, one that has less flab hanging or bulging. Take their compliments as they are and use them to fuel yourself even more.
