As we get older, our body starts to slow down. Keeping fat off and muscles on becomes a much harder task. You may find that you have to work a lot harder to keep your body in good health. So far there has been little development in medicines that effectively slow down the aging process, so until one is developed, you’ll have to make do with plenty of exercise and good food.
One reason why we lose the ability to build muscle is due to our metabolism slowing down. However, scientific research has been able to pinpoint some of the reasons why we age. With a lot of work and a little luck, we’ll be able to extend our life spans substantially in the future.
If you are worried about your age and staying young, there are a number of things you can do. Exercise regularly, eat well, and keep your body weight down. These are the main factors that affect how fast we age or how long we live.
A lot of us are busy with our lives and have little time to exercise. However, even a short workout is enough to make a difference to your health. Going to the gym, swimming, cycling, or taking a brisk walk in the park is adequate. If you are a beginner, remember to start slow, as overdoing it can lead to injuries. Listen to your body; a little pain is to be expected with any exercise, but it can sometimes be a sign of other underlying problems.
Asides from physical exercise, you will also need to begin to change your eating habits. With our busy lives, we sometimes forget to stop and eat good hearty meals, and instead opt for packaged fast foods. Unfortunately, all the bad foods that you eat now can lead to serious illnesses further down the line.
That’s not to say that you can’t eat any sweet foods; a little it of sugar and fat is okay to consume now and then. It is best to avoid foods that contain too many unsaturated fats or complex sugar types; these promote the development of free radicals in the body. Sugar is actually vital for the body; it is converted into energy, which we need to go about our day. Fats are also needed to promote the release of several hormones into our blood.
To complement your new healthy diet, you’ll need to do more activity to get your body working. A simple walk around the block can help to increase your blood flow and get your heart rate up; this will strengthen your cardiovascular system. More movement can also keep your joints lubricated and increase your limb movements.
Research has shown that people who don’t do any form of training in their lifetimes will have only 60% of the aerobic capacity of a 30-year-old by the time they reach 65. Without regular exercise, you will find that keeping on any amount of muscle is nearly impossible as you reach old age.
A study was done looking at a group of runners over a 25-year period. All of the runners who kept up with their regular fitness programs maintained the same physical health as they had 20 years before. In other words, their body’s aging slowed down. For runners who did specific strength training, they slowed the aging process by about 10 years.
If you haven’t been an active person for most your life, don’t worry; it’s not too late to turn the tables and start on an exercise regime. Do a little research and pick an exercise that suits you. Remember to start out slow and gradually build up your fitness program intensity. A lot of people make the mistake of overdoing it to begin with. What you do now will keep you happy and healthy in the years to come
