The hardest thing I had to do to improve my fitness and lead a healthier lifestyle was get started! This is a problem for many people, as we tend to put far too much pressure on ourselves, then rather than doing something, we end up doing nothing.

It's a vicious circle we need to break. Here are some simple steps I followed to improve my fitness and break the cycle of doing nothing instead of something. They will work for you as well.

The first step is to alleviate the pressure we put on ourselves, so don't have any great expectations when you begin on what you want to achieve. We can take little baby steps to improve our fitness, as even a walk to the local shop everyday is a good start, then after a while you can take your fitness activities to the next level.

A good habit to get into is stretching, as this can be done almost anywhere and everywhere. Stretching will increase your flexibility, help protect you from workout injuries, make training easier, especially when you do it before and after a main exercise. You should do these stretches even before you go for a walk, so you get into the habit.

You can encourage a friend to join the gym with you, or get a home gym and get your family or friends to join you there. Having a training partner will help you with motivation and is good for safety in helping controlling the weights.

It might be that the thought of walks or a home gym send shivers through you, in which case you should look at inspirational fitness videos/dvds and magazines to get some good ideas of what you might like to do to keep fit. My bid to improve my fitness involved choosing a fitness program I enjoy, so I'm motivated to keep at it.

Another factor that is critical in leading a healthy lifestyle is to eat the right foods, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep. When you find yourself being drawn to a sugary or salty snack, pick the healthy option nine times out of ten.

The crucial thing that helped me to improve my fitness and get a healthier lifestyle, was to make small changes at the start, as these changes lead to bigger things in better fitness and more energy for life.
