Aerobics is a type of exercise that is done to improve your fitness level by building muscle and more flexible, as well as by improving your cardiovascular health. Aerobics was created by Dr. Kenneth Cooper and Col. Pauline Potts who came up with the ideas behind this form of exercise. They did not understand how people who were strong physically could have a difficult time with basic tasks including walking, running, swimming, and riding a bike. Dr. Cooper began measuring how people used oxygen while doing these activities. He then wrote a book that included the exercises that now make up many aerobic workouts.
What is aerobic exercise? “Aerobic” is a word that means “with oxygen” and refers to how oxygen is created when you build muscle. Aerobic exercise includes all physical exercises that are done at a moderate intensity level for a certain length of time. With aerobic exercise, oxygen helps you burn fat and sugar and produces a chemical called adenosine triphosphate that carries energy in your cells. For your body to burn fat while you work out, you need oxygen. Aerobic exercises are done at an intensity level that provides your muscle cells with a constant stream of oxygen.
Aerobic exercises include things like going for a moderately fast run but not sprinting, and playing tennis with another person. Both of these exercises keep you moving constantly. Golf and tennis with a partner are not aerobic exercises, though, because you are not moving the whole time.

Aerobics is now done in a way that incorporates dancing movements in some of the routines. There are many different types of aerobics and you can find classes offered for all different fitness levels. Many fitness centers have aerobics classes for beginners through advanced levels of fitness that are lead by a certified trainer. Many trainers have specific training and expertise in different levels and types of aerobics.
Anaerobic exercise refers to exercises done “without oxygen”. Aerobic and anaerobic refer to the energy that moves through your body while you workout. Anaerobic exercise refers to the first part of exercise or any short but intense periods of exercise where sugar is consumed without oxygen. Anaerobic exercises are those done at a fast pace or those that involve a short burst of a great amount of effort. You burn calories at a higher rate with anaerobic exercises than with those exercises that require you to have oxygen to burn fat in your body.
Examples of anaerobic exercises include things like sprinting or doing heavy weight lifting that cause a lack of oxygen in your body that causes your muscles to burn mostly carbohydrates which burn fast and don’t need oxygen to burn. When you do anaerobic exercises, you increase your oxygen which means you burn more fat through burning carbohydrates. Anaerobic exercises are great for building your strength, toning your body, improving your circulation, and increasing the health of your heart.
