Obesity is on the rise in the United States, and a lot of scientists and researchers are wondering if there is a link between obesity and fast food. There are certainly facts pointing that fast food is causing obesity. For instance, in the last 10 years, obesity rates have gone up. At the same time, fast food has become the primary choice among many Americans.

All across the country, fast food chains can be seen in most towns and cities. There are hundreds of ads on television and radio, in print, and on the Internet for fast food places and their latest offering. A large number of these ads are aimed at the younger crowd. It’s no wonder childhood or juvenile obesity is growing at an alarming rate these days.

There have been numerous studies conducted to find out if obesity is caused by fast food. According to the results, it appears that families that eat fast food at least three times a week have a higher risk of having higher BMIs and becoming obese compared to families that don’t eat fast food as frequently.

BMI stands for body mass index. It is the formula used by doctors to determine if a person is overweight or not. A person with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. A BMI between 25 and 30 means a person is overweight. According to statistics, two-thirds of the adult population in the United States are overweight, and a third are obese. Obesity is a condition that causes much concern since it can trigger health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease.

Fat Politics: The Real Story behind America's Obesity EpidemicAside from fast food, studies have found that lifestyle choices have an effect on body weight. For instance, those families who go to fast food chains frequently tend to store unhealthy food items in their homes. They hardly eat fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and this only make the effects of the fries, burgers, and other fast foods all the more severe.

Some studies have also found that slender teenagers who occasionally eat fast food tend to consume less calories the rest of the day in an effort to balance their unhealthy choice. Teenagers who are overweight and obese, on the other hand, don’t have the same tendency. Although there’s plenty of evidence showing obesity is caused by fast food, it isn’t the only factor.

The important thing is to make healthier eating choices. For some people, it can be downright difficult to give up fast food altogether, but cutting back on the consumption of fast food can go a long way to keep them from becoming obese. The occasional burger and fries can be balanced by eating lots of healthy foods in between — fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and nuts. Regular exercise should also be incorporated.
